After several seasons of attempting a supplemental feed program with a typical broadcast feeder,
we decided to design a feeder that actually did what it was supposed to do. Without the hassle of
programmable timers, batteries or electric motors in an outdoor environment.
First, we wanted feed to be available whenever deer and turkey were foraging on our land (in South Central Alabama), day or night, to maximize the herd’s nutritional boost. And to help keep game on our property.
What’s more, we were tired of climbing on our four-wheeler and hoisting 50-pound bags overhead just to load our feeders. So we developed a safe and easy ground-level design. At the same time, we knew we wanted our feeder to be durable and reliable. One that was versatile enough to dependably dispense a wide variety of different feeds in the field.
After testing several prototypes in 2000 and 2001, we launched a limited pilot program in 2003—deploying several hundred units for two seasons of field testing. Even with our unrefined initial design, we could see the great value of a simplified feeder design.
Our field testing led to two key design improvements for greater durability: 1) We made the leg and feed tray a welded, all-steel assembly, and 2) We changed the drum material from steel to rugged polypropylene.
All of which is why the Buck Eye Gravity Feeder is the simplest, most reliable and the most durable feeder you can find. Not to mention the smartest one you can get for your money!
